CTUIR Swearing-In Ceremony Rescheduled for Dec. 7

Mission, OR – The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation Board of Trustees has rescheduled the swearing-in of the recently-elected Board of Trustees and General Council Officers to Monday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Nixyaawii Governance Center.

The Swearing-In Ceremony, which was to be held Dec. 2, was postponed by the Board which voted Monday to hold off until an election dispute has been settled via the processes outlined in the CTUIR Election Code.

The complaint was heard Nov. 25 and Dec. 3 by the Election Commission which issued a decision on Dec. 4 that upholds the election results.

In its decision document, the Commission states that it does not dispute Ellen Taylor’s contention that several absentee ballots were returned to Tribal voters by the Post Office due to a Post Office computer error that the Post Office Box used by the Commission was closed. The Commission says the number of absentee ballots affected by this computer error is unknown but that it has evidence of six absentee ballots being returned for this reason. The Commission says it inquired with the Post Office about the number and identity of returned absentee ballots but they were provided no additional information, and they further state that Taylor provided no evidence that the absentee ballot returns were caused by the Election Commission.

Per the Election Code, the complainant has the option of filing for judicial review of the decision within five days.
