MISSION – Yellowhawk Tribal Health Center is hosting a Wellness Gathering on Oct. 15 in the clinic’s large conference room from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will commence with healthy physical activities at 8 a.m. which will include a 5K run, a walk, and TaiChi. At 9 a.m. Dr. Darryl Tonemah, keynote speaker, will begin teaching on the subject “Wellness from Childhood to Elderhood.”
Tonemah is an American Indian singer, songwriter, actor, and author who also travels to indigenous communities around the world teaching behavioral methods of change, health and wellness. Tonemah has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Cultural Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a master’s degree in Community Counseling, and bachelor degrees in Psychology, Sociology and Gerontology. As an actor, he has made appearances in “DMZ”, “The Last Of The Mohicans,” and “The Cherokee Word for Water.”
Those who attend the wellness gathering will learn skills to living a healthy lifestyle. They will experience digital storytelling, participate in a cooking demonstration, and qualify for raffle prizes. Exhibitors such as Massage Therapists will be in attendance, there will be a booth for flu shots, child care will be offered and a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
