Carbon & Culture Symposium Student Poster Competition

Thank you to all the students who submitted posters to our competition!

During the 3-day Carbon and Culture Symposium, we wanted to hear from the youth on their thoughts on carbon management strategies in the Columbia Region. Our focus was to hear the voices of youth in middle school, high school, and college to take part in our poster competition. To better understand their thoughts and knowledge on this topic, themes were created for them to choose from and express their creative ideas through art. The themes that were created were:

  1. What does Climate Resilience mean to you?
  2. What does it mean to be a Land Manager (farms, ranches, forests, gardens, etc.)?
  3. Our Experiences with First Foods and Food Systems (harvesting, processing, ceremony).
  4. Our place in the Carbon Cycle.
  5. Other topics related to the environment and your vision of the future.

K12 Schools, Colleges, and Universities within the CTUIR Homeland were eligible to enter this poster competition. Poster competition categories include Middle School Traditional, High School Traditional, College Undergraduate Traditional, and Computer Assisted (A.I.) Art.

Students had a month to complete their artwork and turn it in. Overall, there were over 13 students who taken part in the poster competition. We had our judges be from the Crow’s Shadow Institution of The Arts to pick out the top three winners in the AI category, High School Digital, and High School Tradition Hand Drawn posters. The winners were announced on the last day of the symposium. Students received a certificate for participation, and a stipend for the winners in each category. It was wonderful to see all the students' perspectives on what they thought of the environment and what the future would look like to them because everything we do and change is for the youth to inherit a better world.

One of the event participants shared that she hoped for more youth participation in the event next time, and our organizing team is grateful to everyone who submitted art and to our judges with Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts!
